Not drinking Italian wine from north of Tuscany would leave out Barolo and Amarone which are some of the best wines from anywhere in my opinion, so I wouldn’t pay too much attention to that advice:)

I haven’t heard of Lake Garda for wine, but it sounds like there is a lot of different wines. Any place with wine and beautiful scenery sounds good to me!

You will find wine making in all of Italy and as the country is so varied so is the wine. Gentle whites around Soave, Pinots from Alto Adige and Friuli to the great Tuscans, Barberas and Bardolinos.

“Good” is subjective. You could ask for a little taste (bicchierino) of the house wine(s) before ordering. Also remember, the meal will influence the taste of the wine.

I don’t think I have ever been to any of those extremes, but it is true you can’t always judge the wine on its price, and we generally go for the ‘vino di casa’ as well. Especially in the south.
